In 1999, Danos introduced the W.A.T.C.H. safety program. This behavior-based initiative used paper cards to remind employees to “Work Always To Control Hazards.” These W.A.T.C.H cards have been used to make note of good safety practices or report safety issues. For many years, the cards were submitted and processed manually. In 2014, an electronic submittal option was developed, and now Danos is proud to launch the new W.A.T.C.H. card app for mobile devices.
The app is a convenient and timely way to submit cards that makes promoting and tracking safety easier and more convenient than ever. The app is available in the iTunes and Android stores and can be downloaded and used by any Danos employee as well as customers and contractors. After a simple account set up, users can select from categories such as vehicle safety, procedure, environment, personal protective equipment, tools and equipment, body use and position and mark the item as safe, not applicable or at-risk. These reports can be about a Danos employee, customer or third-party as well as any near-misses, use of stop work authority (SWA) and/or actions taken. Danos encourages employee W.A.T.C.H. card participation through rewards such as gold points. Double points are awarded for each electronic submission. Since 2011, Danos has processed close to 85,000 watch cards!
All information submitted via the app is routed directly to Danos’ central database in real-time. Not only does this cut down on the administrative costs of printing and processing the cards, it gives the Danos safety team important information that they can use to immediately address and manage near-misses and SWAs as soon as they are submitted. Additionally, the team can analyze W.A.T.C.H. data to identify trends or issues of concern that can then be addressed with refresher training and communicated to employees during weekly safety calls and meetings.
